By the late 1990s, the total world population of Vancouver Island Marmots had dropped below 100 individuals, and it was deemed unlikely that it would rebound on its own. Today, the Toronto Zoo, Calgary Zoo, Mountain View Conservation Society, and the Tony Barrett Mount Washington Marmot Breeding Centre (with support from the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Foundation) form the basis of the captive-breeding component of the recovery program.
