CONNECT Magazine June 2008

CONNECT is our monthly magazine for members. You'll find feature articles and member news — including exhibit openings and important conservation achievements.

  • A Dragon's Tale (in PDF)
The tale of the ribbon seadragon began a very long time ago in the waters of North Western Australia, but has recently made its way to the shores of The Dallas World Aquarium in a very special way. By Paula Branshaw Carlson

  • Bridging Gaps in Sea Turtle Knowledge (in PDF)
Ancient and mysterious, sea turtles have been traveling the oceans for 150 million years. On the Outer Banks of North Carolina, state and nonprofit organizations have been working together to learn more about these animals and find new ways to present that information to the public. By Christian Guerreri and David Sybert

  • Restoring Florida Coral Reefs One Fragment at a Time (in PDF)
Deforestation is a familiar phrase used to describe the loss of one of our most important natural resources. But how about a natural resource not so easily seen? Is it safe to say that a coral reef is similar to a tropical rainforest? By Tom Wagner

  • Russia's Grizzly Coast (in PDF)
The world's vast temperate zone environments are only occasionally the subject of new zoo exhibits. The Minnesota Zoo decided to create Russia's Grizzly Coast, the first major zoo exhibit to focus on the spectacular but gravely endangered animals and landscapes of the Russian Far East. By Lee Ehmke

On the Cover . . .
. . . is a juvenile ribbon seadragon. In April 2008, The Dallas World Aquarium hosted the first ever Seadragon Husbandry Symposium. More than 40 participants – representing more than 20 AZA institutions and including several international participants – attended the three-day event, and shared seadragon husbandry information through presentations and discussions.
