In 1999, the Ellen Trout Zoo embarked into a new realm of husbandry with the completion of a new barn and exhibits for housing White Rhinos and Masai Giraffe. The completion of the barn was closely followed by the arrival of a pair of young Masai Giraffe.

On 1 July 2009, the Zoo was proud to announce the birth of the fifth Masai Giraffe calf since the acquisition of the original two animals. This male calf was born to Emi Lane and Rafiki which have proven to be excellent parents over the years. Born sometime during the night, the calf had a slow start in the morning but quickly rebounded and has bonded well with the dam, is nursing well, and is active and healthy.

The Ellen Trout Zoo works closely with AZA's Masai Giraffe Population Management Plan (PMP) and has contributed to the breeding of Masai Giraffe at multiple AZA-accredited zoos resulting in many offspring produced over the years.
