A Research Associate works in the team responsible for the daily husbandry of the captive, endangered birds at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Primary duties include: food preparation and provision; cleaning, perching and maintaining aviaries; observing and recording reproductive and social behaviors; managing reproduction in breeding pairs; incubation and hand-rearing; assisting in veterinary care. Additional duties include: field-based husbandry and post-release monitoring; facility, equipment and grounds maintenance; record-keeping and report-writing; assisting in the administration of the program and other related tasks.
Representative qualifications include Bachelor's degree in biological science or a related field, or equivalent specialized training; experience with captive husbandry and propagation of birds; record-keeping and data management skills; ability to use computer programs for word processing and spreadsheets; ability to collect biological samples; communication and teamwork skills; ability to prepare and make presentations; physically fit and able to lift 50lbs; experience of fieldwork is an additional benefit.
