Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ is in search of talented, energetic and knowledgeable keepers to work in the zoo’s carnivore, bird, hoofstock and reptile departments.

Candidates must be dependable, friendly and self starters; they must be familiar with, and competent in, husbandry, capture and restraint, propagation, nutrition and proper record keeping of a wide variety of animals.

Daily duties include: the observation of general animal health and behavior and reporting any abnormal situations to the zoo supervisor. Keepers will be responsible for general care, diet preparation and feeding of the collection as well as exhibit modification and design.

Additional duties include interacting with zoo visitors and presenting regularly scheduled programs to the public. The zoo will be opening a new aquarium in 2010 so experience with marine fish and aquatic systems is highly desired.

Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions as well as working weekends and holidays.

Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 60 pounds). Good communication and organizational skills are a must. Candidates should have the ability to work well independently as well as with others in a team environment.

One year experience in a zoo setting preferred. An associate’s degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology or related field is preferred.
