The Manager of Education and Formal Programs ensures that the educational and formal programs offered by the Phoenix Zoo such as classes, camps, outreach, school tours and workshops, are engaging, educational, and are of the highest quality to achieve the Zoo’s objectives. He or she also serves as the main zoo liaison to the formal school system and oversees the development of new materials, projects, and programs to expand our educational objectives.
Responsibilities will include supervising all formal, educational programs including: outreach, day, night, and intercession camps, farm-based care giving programs, school tours, workshops, and animal presentations, early childhood programs, assuring excellent quality of curricula for all educational and formal programs and ensures school programs align with current Arizona State Academic Content Standards and creating and facilitating educator workshops and coordinates educator events. The Manager in the role will develops positive relationships with local educators to support and promote the Zoo’s school programming and participate in the development of new educational projects including in-depth opportunities for visiting school groups and teachers. Additionally this individual will supervises interns and other volunteers that support formal programs. This includes oversight of the volunteer facilitated Special Needs Program. Other administrative duties will include overseeing the creation of annual Programs Calendar of Events, budgets and financial accounting of the division’s work, collaborating with the department’s Interpretive Content Coordinator to ensure all educational brochures, signage, and web content are aligned with formal program objectives and content and working with the Director of Guest Experiences to evaluate and assess all programs and outcomes. As a manager this individual will also mentor, guide, motivate and ensure quality training for staff.
This position requires a BA in science or education or equivalent in experience. A Master’s is desired, but not required. A qualified candidate will have three to five years experience supervising educational programs in either formal or informal settings, experience conducting educational workshops for adults and children, familiarity with national science standards, demonstrated knowledge about biology, conservation, ecology, and education and experience with inquiry-based approaches to science instruction as well as informal approaches to science. The demonstrated ability to work well in collaborative relationships, especially with members of the community are required as well as skill in managing teams, proven record as dynamic leader/team player.
