Virginia Safari Park, a 180-acre drive through zoo and breeding center, is expanding and searching for an Associate Curator. We maintain an inventory of 1,000+ specimens comprised of large groups of hoofedstock as well as a “Safari Village”.
Responsibilities will include:
• Direct oversight of our “Safari Village” which is our walk-about section, currently comprised of 300+ specimens featuring large enclosures with tigers and cheetahs, warthogs, primates, reptiles (including Galapagos and Aldabra tortoises), our petting area, kangaroo walk-through, aviaries and upcoming expansions.
• Hiring and oversight of staff in this area
• Cover for General Curator in absentia
• Collection management (including acquisition and surplus input),
• Record-keeping.
• Set schedules, conduct section staff meetings, handle and address staff issues as they arise.
This section incorporates visitor interaction (petting area, lorikeets, giraffe feeding, etc.) with certain species, under direct supervision of staff. We are looking for the person which can manage the collection, assist in exhibit design, set up optimal breeding conditions for targeted species, and be able to fill in all positions if and when needed.
This will be a very hands-on position. You will be expected to interact daily with staff, guests and animal collection.
A degree in animal science or related biology field of study, along with experience in a zoological setting preferred. Extensive experience with zoo species may be substituted for degree. Previous positive management experience required.
We require a strong work ethic, good physical condition and a willingness to learn on the job. We have very strict personal appearance requirements and maintain a non-smoking work environment.
Competitive pay scale with medical benefits. E-mail resumes to:
