Seas in Danger

The world’s oceans are facing many threats including pollution, habitat damage, overfishing, coral reef bleaching, and species loss.  Seventy percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, whether it's the ocean, a river, a lake or a pond.  All of these bodies of water form an interconnected aquatic ecosystem.  What happens upriver affects the water and habitats downstream and onward to the sea.

Conservation Leaders

AZA-accredited aquariums and zoos are vital participants in advancing ocean conservation science and education.  These institutions, joining with their communities, teachers, responsible companies and international conservation organizations, are dedicated to conserving ocean resources for everyone to enjoy now and for future generations. AZA-accredited aquariums and zoos are leaders in reaching 160 million people across the U.S. every year with important, science-based information about ocean conservation.

Research and Education

Programs at AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums include:

  • marine animal rescue and rehabilitation efforts
  • coral reef rebuilding
  • wetland restoration
  • sustainable seafood programs
  • beach clean up events
  • sea turtle monitoring
